Tightly connected with the origin of Chinese characters, and as one kind of formative art, seal engraving has been popular in Chinese daily life for several thousand years and has developed into a special and complete aesthetic system.
Founded in Hangzhou in 1904, Xiling Seal Engraver’s Society is regarded as the earliest, most influential and successful research institute of inscription and Chinese painting & calligraphy, and is the main representative of the Art of Chinese Seal Engraving.
To further pass down and promote outstanding traditional Chinese art represented by Chinese seal, and to strengthen the international popularity and cultural influence of Chinese calligraphy and paintings, from 2008, the Society has actively carried out Exhibits for the Centenary of Xiling Seal Engraver’s Society, which has been held in US, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Sri Lanka. Now, for the first time, this exhibition is presented in Australia, aiming to showcase the unique charm and cultural essence of Chinese seals through selected row stone engraved by members of Xiling Seal Engraver’s Society, on which are names of Olympic games combined with meaning of classic poems. In addition, a collection of selected Chinese calligraphy and painting works is also included in the exhibition, showcasing the artistic level of Xiling Seal Engraver’s Society.
