Message from the Director

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, China Cultural Center in Sydney collaborates with renowned Australian curator Nicholas Tsoutas to present the Dialogue between Chinese and Australian Women Artists for the fourth time. With Flow as the theme and through diverse mediums such as painting, installation, video and sculpture, the exhibition invites five Chinese and Australian indigenous female artists, including Gao Rong, Jingwei Bu, Mimi Tong, Jennifer Herd, and Joanne Currie Nalingu, to engage in dialogue to illustrate their thoughts about history and culture, the changing times and humanistic spirits from a female perspective and to explore the unique role of knowledge, art and culture in the cross-cultural exchange.

As an ancient Chinese saying goes, “All living things should flourish without harming each other; all ways of life should thrive without hindering each other.” Knowledge, art, and culture serve as the best vehicles for different cultures to communicate. By treating each other equally, exchanging and mutual learning, being inclusive and sharing, we will undoubtedly promote the diverse flourishing of the world cultural garden. This exhibition will once again showcase the consciousness and spiritual pursuits of contemporary women artists, enrich China-Australia artistic exchanges and enhance cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to curator Tsoutas for his dedicated efforts. It is his keen thought and consist attention to the development of women art that have made this exhibition possible.

I wish the exhibition a complete success!

About the exhibition

In 2024, CHINA CULTURAL CENTRE IN SYDNEY has extended its commitment to a dialogue and artistic exchange between Chinese, Chinese Australian and Australian women artists. This continued support exemplifies the China Cultural Centre’s desire to encourage and celebrate the extraordinary cultural achievements of women, and again celebrate their artistic contributions in the pursuit of a more equitable society that values women in the arts, and in society. FLOW knowledge+art+ culture  (川流不息·知识+艺术+文化) , is the fourth all women’s exhibition beginning with WHOSE STORY IS THIS?…Aanyway! in 2020, followed by AIR WATER LOVE IN 2021 and MATERIAL GIRRRL all that shine in 2022.

The curatorial objective, of FLOW, is directly focused on the means and processes of how we share the spaces of knowledge, art and culture, and how knowledge and art functions at these intersections of cultural differences as a means of exchange. Central to this curatorial objective, is to comprehend the idea of flow itself, that everything is in a constant state of flux and mobility and that today, in real terms, art and culture as terms and tropes within and like society and civilizations themselves are neither fixed or static, nor singular in position, as they are in a constant state of flow and change. It seems that we exist in a constant state of flow, as we,and things, are moving continuously. It is in this permanent state of flow, or perhaps a flow state that ideas, information, knowledge and art exist in a constant state of exchange, and of transformation and renegotiation, as a continuous circulation of things, ideas, cultures and people. FLOW explores how art resonates between contemporary cultures, and examines how the shifts in the contemporary art of women renegotiates the connections between the issues and concerns of women artists, across the divides of difference and borders, and how art functions and informs the national and post national cultural discourses.
