Set in 1926, young intellectual Xiao Jianqiu (Sun Daolin) takes a teaching post in a small town in Zhejiang. On the journey, he meets the widow Ms. Wen (Shangguan Yunzhu) and is moved by her plight. At a welcoming dinner, he also meets Tao Lan (Xie Fang), his old classmate’s sister, who grows to admire him. Torn between his compassion for Ms. Wen and his feelings for Tao Lan, Xiao chooses to marry Ms. Wen, sparking shock and jealousy. When Tao Lan’s admirer Qian Zhengxing (Wang Pei) offers to fund the marriage if Xiao steps aside and relinquishes Tao Lan, passions ignite, leading to an emotional confrontation.
