About the Artist

Born 1948 in China, largely by self taught, Shen Jiawei became one of the most influential painters in China in 1970s. One of his famous works from this era, Standing Guard for Our Great Motherland (1974), exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum (1998 ) and at the Asia Society Museum (2008), both in New York, and now in the collection of the Long Museum in Shanghai. From 1982 to 1984 he studied in the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Shen won awards five times at the China National Art Exhibitions. He immigrated to Australia in 1989 and is now one of leading portrait and history painters in Australia and overseas. Shen is a 14 time finalist for Archibald Prize, and also winners for Mary MacKillop Art Award in 1995 , Sir John Sulman Prize in 2006 and Gallipoli Art Prize in 2016. He was commissioned three times by Australian National Portrait Gallery, four times by Australian Federal Parliament House to paint portraits for celebrities, including the Danish Crown Princess Mary(2005), the Australian Prime Minister John Howard(2009) and Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove(2018). His portrait of Pope Frances(2013 ) is in Vatican collection. Shen’s works are in state and national collections in both Australia and China, including his eighteen history paintings collected by National Museum, National Art Museum, and Military Museum, all in Beijing.
