2023 Spring Festival Chinese Painting Invitation Exhibition by Famous Artists specially curated by China Cultural Centre in Sydney and Australian Artists Society to promote the cultural exchange and cooperation between China and Australia and strengthen the bond between overseas Chinese in Australia and their home country, will be held from 12th January to 24th February 2023 in China Cultural Centre in Sydney, celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit and presenting a feast of enjoyment for the Australian public and overseas Chinese in Australia.

 

With thousands years of development, the Chinese painting has a long history and abundant heritages. In recent years, against the background of the fusion between Eastern and Western cultures, the works of the overseas Chinese artists in Australia present unprecedented diversity, meticulous painting, freehand painting and figurative painting…The artists either draw passionately in great details, or pay special attention to the improvement of their artistic perception, or focus on the exploration and experiment of art forms, or lay particular stress on spiritual experience and expression. All of them endeavour to develop and refine their own artistic languages and styles.

 

This exhibition presents 40 excellent artworks created by ten overseas Chinese artists in Australia including Xiuying Chen, Mingcai Sun, Weikai Peng, Chu Gong, Xiaoxian Tao, Xianlai Xu, Aihua Zhang, Xia Chen, Ximei Xu, and Jige Liu. All these works showcase not only the inheritance of the traditional techniques with Chinese cultural richness, but also the broader artistic realm with various exploration fostered by Australian multicultural atmosphere.

 

At the beginning of the New Year, the exhibition through its unique Chinese ink painting will not only highlight the rich artistic expression power of the Chinese painting and the adherence to the Chinese artistic traditions by the overseas Chinese artists in Australia, but also enhance the Australian’s understanding of the profound Chinese traditional culture and its inheritance and evolvement in the modern times.

About the exhibition

At the invitation of China Cultural Centre in Sydney and Australian Artists Society, ten overseas Chinese artists in Australia including Xiuying Chen, Mingcai Sun, Weikai Peng, Xu Gong, Xiaoxian Tao, Xianlai Xu, Aihua Zhang, Xia Chen, Ximei Xu and Jige Liu participate in 2023 Spring Festival Chinese Painting Invitation Exhibition by Famous Artists, which will be held from 12th January to 24th February 2023 in China Cultural Centre in Sydney to celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit, promote the cultural exchange and cooperation between China and Australia and strengthen the bond between overseas Chinese in Australia and their home country. While the exhibition satisfies the intellectual and cultural needs of the overseas Chinese in Australia, it will introduce the cultural richness of the Chinese painting art to the Australian people and enhance the Australian’s understanding of the profound Chinese traditional culture and its inheritance and involvement in the modern times.

 

The ten artists have made various artistic explorations in Australia’s multicultural atmosphere, continued to expand, extend and refine their artistic languages based on the Chinese traditional arts and showcased their achievements in contemporary Chinese painting art to the international audience.

 

Xiuying Chen’s Group Painting of “Young Boys Send Blessings” created a lively, lovely and joyful image of children with freestyle colourful ink and accurate and graceful lines.  

 

Mingcai Sun is an expert at landscape painting with powerful and forceful brush strokes, particularly when it comes to depicting the scenery of mountain springs, waterfalls, rain and fog. His artworks are exquisite and magnificent, full of natural taste with a charm of Chinese traditional literati paintings. 

 

Weikai Peng specially created several paintings of jade rabbits and magpies for this exhibition, which not only have unique and original composition, but also feature a distinct colour scheme and arrangement, making them aesthetically pleasing.

 

Chu Gong’s ink landscape paintings have a distinctive composition and superimposed shading, which reflect a profound understanding of the traditional painting essence and the superb control of the techniques.

 

Xiaoxian Tao’s meticulous flower and bird paintings are the perfect combination of her solid classical painting techniques and contemporary aesthetic perception, which are beautiful and elegant, vibrant but not vulgar, heavy but not stagnant.

 

Xianlai Xus Australian natural landscapes and cityscapes paintings reflect the the influence of dreamlike and powerful style of Master Gongwang Huang and the boundless and profound charm of Master Binhong Huang. 

 

Aihua Zhang ’s works strive to break the conventions of patterns and explore in wielding her brush with strong emotions and create her unique and valuable painting style.

 

Xia Chen’s works not only have the richness of the traditional Chinese painting but also meet the appreciation taste of modern people. Her works appeal to all with perfect integration of colour, light, form and expression.

 

Ximei Xu is a performing artist, writer and painter. She inputs emotions into her paintings, making it poetic and elegant.

 

Jige Liu’s works with a magnificent and harmonious composition seems to exude a quiet floral fragrance, making it unforgettable and refreshing.

 

The exhibition of 40 excellent works covers various themes like landscapes, flowers, birds and figures and features meticulous paintings and freestyle splash-ink and colourful ink paintings. Keeping up with the trend of time, inheriting Chinese traditional painting techniques and featuring the Chinese traditional cultural richness, these works present a new look of the Chinese painting arts through unique Chinese ink painting language, various artistic themes and diverse expression styles.

Jige Liu

 

Jige Liu worked at the choreography division of China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater. She has been focusing on impressionistic painting since 1993. She has studied with Ren Zhi and Gao Shizun. Her works have been selected and published in the“Artwork Album of Senior Artists Association of the Ministry of Culture”for many times and won awards. In 2005, she successfully held a sole exhibition and published a collection of her paintings.

Mingcai Sun

 

Born in 1939 in Harbin, China, Sun Mingcai graduated from the Beijing School of Arts and Crafts (now the College Of Art and Design of Beijing University of Technology ) in 1961 and  taught there after graduation in the same yea as an art educator. He studied with the famous landscape masters Dong Shouping and Tao Yiqing. He moved to Australia in 2001 and founded the Australia-China Ink Painting Association and the Australia-China Artists’ Association in 2012. In 2013, he held the 1st “Chinese Celebrities and Artists from Home and Abroad Selected Works Exhibition” (Sydney Opera House) with Australian Artists Society and the 2nd “Chinese Celebrities and Artists from Home and Abroad Selected Works Exhibition” (China Cultural Centre in Sydney) in 2015. In 1990, he published “Sun Mingcai Painting Collection”, “Selected Works of Sun Mingcai Painting Exhibition”in 2006, and “Selected Works of Australia-China Ink Painting Artists Union” in 2013.

Aihua Zhang

 

Ms. Amelia Aihua Zhang is a well-known Chinese artist, university professor, and now lives in Sydney, Australia. She is the Vice chairman of the Australian Artists Society, member of Australia Liverpool Art Society, Horizon Photography Society of Australia, and Photographic Society of America, and distinguished painter of the Paris Painting and Calligraphy Committee of France.

She graduated with Fine Arts major at an early age and completed the Advanced Study Course of Art Creation at the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University. She has learned from Professor Guo Fangyi of the Academy of Fine Arts of Central China Normal University and the famous painters Zhang Longyin, Guo Shifu, Tang Mingsong and Xiong Xiaodong.

She is good at watercolor painting and Chinese calligraphy and well posted h in handcraft creation.

Weikai Peng 

 

Weikai Peng , also known as Tianwen, is based in Sydney, Australia. He is currently the chairman of the Australian Artists Society, the honorary president of the Chinese Masters Painting and Calligraphy Institute, the advisor of the Australian Alumni Association of the China Academy of Fine Arts, the art advisor of the Guangming Pictorial, and the professor of the Shenzhen Academy of Painting and Calligraphy. His artistic achievements have been included in the “World Chinese Artists’ Achievement Dictionary”, “New Chinese Artists”, “Overseas Chinese Elegance” and “New Chinese Calligraphy Masters”, and he has been awarded the title of national level artist. His works have been exhibited in the National Art Museum of China, Shenzhen Museum, as well as in Hong Kong and Taiwan in China, Japan, Australia, etc., and published in Shenzhen Newspaper, Calligraphy and Painting Artist Newspaper, China Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper, World Literature and Art, and Australian Chinese Daily.

Xianlai Xu 

 

Xianlai Xu is the Art Director of the International Charity Collection Society, Vice President of the Australian Art Society, and Vice President of the Australian Yanhuang Painting Institute. He settled in Sydney in 1988, won the 1st Prize of Australia-Asia Art Festival in 1991, held a solo exhibition in Sydney in 1994, participated in the World Chinese Ink Painting Exhibition in Beijing in 1997, and participated in the World Chinese Celebration of Olympic Games Famous Artists Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition held in Beijing in 2008.

In 2013, he held a touring Xu Xianlai Chinese painting of Australian landscape exhibition at the invitation of Deng Xiaoping Memorial Hall, Shenzhen University, Shaoguan Normal University, Nanhai Literary Association, Yangchun Literary Association, Huang Shaoqiang Memorial Hall, Jinan University. His works have been collected by institutions and individuals including City of  Itami in Japan, City of Liverpool in Australia,Confucius Institute of New South Wales in Australia, the Deng Xiaoping Memorial Hall in Shenzhen, Shenzhen University, Jinan University, former Vice Premier Ms. Wu Guixian, and Mr. Ma Ying-jeou.

Ximei Xu 

 

Ximei Xu is a painter and art critic from Tianjin, China. She is a disciple of Li Kuchan, a contemporary master of Chinese painting. She is a member of the Tianjin Artists Association of China, the Writers Association, the Tianjin Branch of the China Film and Television Artists Association, the director of the Australian Artists Society, the art advisor of the Australian Institute of Chinese Culture and Art, the Australian Yanhuang Painting Institute, and the vice president of the Australian Painting Institute. Her paintings are of a wide range of materials and forms, elegant and vivid with a spirit of freedom. Her works have been exhibited in Australia, China and internationally, and have won awards and been included in various albums. She has held five solo exhibitions in Tianjin, China and Sydney, Australia in 2013, 2019 and 2022 respectively. She has been widely praised by the art community and the audience. She is quite popular in the art criticism community and has written dozens of critical articles for famous painters and calligraphers such as Liu Guibin, He Jianguo, Li Zongru, Yang Yiqian, Professor Yu Fuqian of Nankai University, Meng Qingzhan, Vice Chairman of Tianjin Art Association, famous painters Bi Gong, Wang Jinhou, Li Dezhen, Liu Zheng, Wang Cunde and Chen Xiuying, etc.

Xiuying Chen 

 

Xiuying Chen graduated from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. She is a member of China Artists Association and Vice President of Australian Artists Society. In over half a century of her art career, Chen Xiuying has created many art pieces with her unique styles and has been awarded a great deal of art prizes. In 2000, she was awarded the title of “Outstanding Art Creator” by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 2013, her artwork “Sydney Central Railway Station” won the Trustees’ Wynne Watercolour Prize 2013 and exhibited in the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW). Michael Brand, the then Director of AGNSW commented at an interview that he was glad that Chen Xiuying’s work is selected, which reflects the artist’s creativity of combination of Australian landscape beauty and traditional Chinese art language. Chen Xiuying’s artwork albums include “Chen Xiuying’s Colour Painting Slection”, “Da Su Ying Zi Art Studio Collection”, and “Ultimate Phoenix Album”.

Xia Chen 

 

Xia Chen is a Chinese painter from Jingzhou, Hubei province, China who graduated from the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Correspondence College in 1995 and Liu Cunhui’s Calligraphy and Painting Workshop on CCTV in 2014. She has learned from the famous painter Liu Cunhui, the second generation disciple of Master Qi Baishi, the famous painter Chen Xiuying, and the famous brush painting painter Gong Xueqing. She has been pursuing traditional painting and calligraphy for a long time, and is good at painting birds, flowers and bamboo. She is currently the Vice President of the Australian Artists Society, a member of the Australian Yanhuang Painting Institute, the Australian Institute of Chinese Culture and Art, and the Australian Academy of Painting;and the Vice President and Secretary-General of the Jingzhou Gongbi Painting Association.

Xiaoxian Tao 

 

Xiaoxian Tao  was born in Beijing in 1943. She is the eldest daughter of the famous Chinese landscape painter Tao Yiqing. She learned from the famous flower and bird painters Yu Zhizhen and Tian Shiguang. After graduating from the Beijing School of Arts and Crafts (now the College of Art and Design of Beijing University of Technology), she was assigned to work as a designer in the foreign trade industry. She was the vice chairman and general manager of China Silk Advertising Ltd. and the editor-in-chief of China Silk magazine.  Now she is the artistic advisor of Australia-China Ink Painting Artists Union and Australia-China Artists Association.

Chu Gong 

 

Chu Gong was born in Shanghai and Graduated from the Fine Arts Faculty of the Art Department of Shanghai Normal University and the Graphic Design Department of the Australian Enmo Institute of Technology. He came to Australia in 1987, after having been a professional art editor for magazines in China. For decades, he has participated in various exhibitions at home and abroad for many times, and has published nearly 1,000 works in Chinese and foreign newspapers, magazines, and picture albums, involving various types of paintings such as Western paintings, Chinese paintings, comic strips, and graphic design. His works have won many awards in domestic and foreign competitions, and have been collected by Chinese and foreign groups and individuals. Now he is the senior art consultant of the Australia-China Artists Association, the Australian Artists Society, and the Australian Academy of Painting, and serves as the vice chairman, vice president, executive member, and executive director of many cultural and art groups in Australia.
