Perhaps the greatest masterpiece of Kunqu Opera is “The Peony Pavilion” written by Tang Xianzu in the early years of the 17th century.The play explores the cultural and social environment of the time. More controversially, it reveals the author’s beliefs concerning love, perfection and happiness.
