“The Australian Association for Literary Translation (AALITRA)” Translation Prize aims to acknowledge the wealth of literary translation skills present in the Australian community.
With the focus on a different language each time the prize is offered (Chinese being the focused language in 2016), this year’s prizes include 1st Prize Prose, 1st Prize Poetry, and Highly Commended Prizes for Prose and Poetry respectively.
Winners of 2016 AALITRA Translation Prize were announced on 13 September at the China Cultural Centre in Sydney, sponsor of this year’s prize.
Professor Nicholas Jose, MC of the event, firstly welcomed participating guests, and gave special thanks to the China Cultural Centre for its sponsorship and support in this year’s event.
“I believe translation can really make a difference in cross-cultural communication and understanding, ……I wish to highly commend the Australian Association for Literary Translation for initiating the translation prize and its efforts in enabling translators to exchange ideas and bridging translators with publishers and other stakeholders”, said Mrs. Zhao Li, Director of the CCCSYD.
As a non-profit organisation with a mission of enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between our peoples, the Centre has a strong focus on intellectual exchange, the exchange of minds and ideas.
“Literary translation makes it possible for people of different languages to read and to relate to each other, and I feel honored that we can contribute to the Translation Prize that encourages and enables translators to keep up the good work”, said Director Zhao.
She also expressed her wish that there would be more opportunities for translators, writers and publishers to work together and contribute to literary translation.
Winners was awarded a cash prize, a book prize, and one year’s membership of AALITRA. Prize-winning entries were also read aloud at the Awards Ceremony, and will be published in the Association’s peer-reviewed open-access journal, The AALITRA Review along with a few words from each of the translators.
AALITRA is a national organization that promotes an interest in all aspects of literary translation. It sponsors public lectures and events on literary translation and holds periodic conferences with university bodies interested in the theory and practice of literary translation.
