Overview
Sponsored by China Cultural Centre in Sydney, Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, organized by Zhejiang Provincial Museum, the exhibition “A Day in the Southern Song Dynasty” highlights the entertainment and leisurely life of the people of Lin’an City during the Southern Song Dynasty, shows audience the city through the perspective of a visitor, and enables the audience to experience the refined and open cultural environment as well as the poetic and picturesque life aesthetics of the people in the Southern Song.
As the most thriving city in the world then, Lin’an City in the Southern Song showed us a fascinating picture of the life with bustling trade and stores aplenty. The exhibition presents the charming culture of the Song Dynasty vividly with the life utensils of 66 items (sets) now collected in 9 museums in Zhejiang Province in a digital way, plus the auxiliary means of video, audio, animation and images, as well as the intangible cultural heritage, natural and humanistic landscape of the Southern Song inherited till today.
About the Exhibition
Two parallel dimensions, the 2-D “Life Scroll” and the 3-D “Virtual Exhibition Hall”, have been created in the exhibition. Along with the tick-tick of twelve hours, the life of the Southern Song is rolling out and visitors can shuttle back and forth to experience the historical and cultural life then with relics.

Animation of Cultural Relics
With “Appreciating Artifacts” as the theme, the “Virtual Exhibition Hall” offers a lifelike experience with the mouse and fingertips. Most of the digital artifacts on display are three-dimensional that can rotate 360 degrees. In the “Virtual Exhibition Hall”, the visitors can examine the details of cultural relics from all angles, search their history while listening to the rhythmical music of cultural relics.
The West Lake Yesterday and Today
The culture of the Southern Song Dynasty has left a deep imprint on the city and life today, including Top Ten Scenes of the West Lake first recognized in the Southern Song Dynasty, various delicacies still enjoyed today, and the lanterns and operas handed down. In the evolution of human civilization, there is much “tacit understanding” beyond time and space, such as cognition and definition of time, Cuju and football, tea art and coffee latte art. The visitors feel the ancient is echoing the present, the Chinese art echoing the western one with the relative comparisons shown in the exhibition.
