As this year marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from Britain to China, China Cultural Centre (Sydney) and Network of International Culturalink Entities will join forces to present a specially commissioned event titled “Hong Kong Movie Week”. A series of award-winning Hong Kong Films representing Hong Kong cinema during the post-war decades will be on screen, together with an insightful lecture to be delivered by an established senior Movie Critic Mr. Ho See Wing (Sampson) from Hong Kong that seeks to provide greater understanding into the world of films from a professional perspective.
About the movie:
The late 1960s saw the rise of youth culture in Hong Kong cinema, embodied by the likes of Connie Chan Po-chu, the top lass among a pack of wildly popular young actresses lovingly crowned Jade Girls, and the venturesome work of filmmakers the likes of Chor Yuen. The Pregnant Maiden, starring Chan and directed by Chor, is a rarity of Cantonese cinema – a screwball comedy that has left behind all the serious pretensions of earlier Cantonese cinema, frolicking instead with abandon in Hong Kong’s new-found prosperity and emerging urbanity.
