As this year marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from Britain to China, China Cultural Centre (Sydney) and Network of International Culturalink Entities will join forces to present a specially commissioned event titled “Hong Kong Movie Week”. A series of award-winning Hong Kong Films representing Hong Kong cinema during the post-war decades will be on screen, together with an insightful lecture to be delivered by an established senior Movie Critic Mr. Ho See Wing (Sampson) from Hong Kong that seeks to provide greater understanding into the world of films from a professional perspective.
About the movie:
The Arch is a monument of artistic and historical importance. It is the first art film in the history of Hong Kong and the debut feature by Cecile Tong Shu-shuen, a pioneer in independent filmmaking and a trailblazing woman director. Set in a 17th-century village, this period drama explores hidden desires and traditional morality with 20th-centry sensibilities, confronting the conventions of Chinese melodrama with stylized cinematic touches profoundly balanced by graceful black-and-white photography and delicate storytelling.
