Preface
Shanghai Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry Online Exhibition is jointly launched by China Culture Center in Sydney and Shanghai Arts and Crafts Museum , which showcases China’s national intangible cultural heritage – Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry, highlighting the spirit of Chinese artists.
Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry is formed by traditional handicraft techniques in the development of modern society. It originated in Europe and entered China at the end of the 19th century. Based on paintings and photographs, Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry uses a variety of stitches and techniques to express and create objects. As a unique skill, Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry shows not only Jiangnan traditional handicraft techniques, European and American decorative arts, but also Shanghai style art. With Chinese and Western compatibility, rich colors, Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry is beautiful and realistic, giving a strong contagious artistic inspiration. In May 2011, Shanghai Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry became a national intangible cultural heritage.
The 20 works in this exhibition are all made by Shanghai contemporary Woolen Needlepoint Tapestry artists. These works showcase both Jiangnan water villages and Shanghai style landscapes; both Chinese famous cultural landmarks and “national treasures”. There’s a wonderful blend of traditions, techniques, and materials. There is also a rich vein of personality and passion. They are fine examples of the ingenuity and innovation that are inherent in our culture, which is defiantly a big eye-opener.
