FOREWORD
Being praised as the name card of a country, a micropaedia, a pocket thesaurus of art, postage stamps record the progress of human civilisation. Chinese stamps display five thousand years of Chinese culture on a square inch paper, and form a magnificent painting of Chinese history. The China Cultural Centre in Sydney and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of People’s Republic of China jointly launch ‘Beautiful China in Postage Stamps’ online exhibition to further interpret the environmental protection concept of ‘lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets’.
China, an oriental civilised country with a long five-thousand-year history. has always caught the eyes of the whole world because of its distinctive traditional culture, colourful national customs and beautiful scenery. There are thousands of postage stamps reflecting the concept of ecological civilisation construction. Not only do they concentrate the natural beauty in the landscape and exotic species of China, they also witness the process of China’s green development. This photo exhibition collects a representative sample of 71 sets of stamps which is divided into five parts – ‘the World National Heritage of China’, ‘Nature Reserve’, ‘Wildlife Resources’, ‘Water Resources’ and ‘Ecological Conservation and Afforestation’. Taking stamps as the carrier, we would like to spread the charm of plants, mountains and rivers in China, to share the idea of harmonious coexistence with the environment.

China has always emphasised the harmonious development between humans and nature. Being a witness of history, postage stamps have converged to make a tale which is more to it than meets the eye. Every stamp in the exhibition can be seen as the essence of nature with distinguished content and aesthetic appeal. In each square inch, we can see the notion of a green, eco-friendly and sustainable development and the journey of China’s reform and opening-up, economic rise, national rejuvenation and enriching its people.
