On the 20th of February, approximately 500 students and teachers from Rooty Hill High School were privileged to witness a very special Chinese Lunar New Year performance by the Chengdu Puppet Group. Organised by the China Cultural Centre in Sydney, the group performed a spectacular show replete with rich Chinese characteristics.
By combining traditional and modern elements, the puppet performance celebrated different aspects of Chinese culture. In particular, the students were enthralled by performances such as the lively and joyful Tibetan dance, the elegant long-sleeve dance, as well as an upbeat modern dance, all of which were superbly executed by skilled puppeteers through the use of marionettes. Cries of astonishment from the audience were heard as the colourful marionettes took part in plate-spinning, ink and wash painting and face-changing.
Mrs. Zhao Li, director of the China Cultural Centre in Sydney, said that the event was to generate the younger generation’s interest in Chinese culture so that they may become envoys of friendship between China and Australia in the future.
Chengdu Puppet Group is the leading performing arts group in the southwest of China. Having performed in more than 20 countries and regions, the group represents Chinese performances on a national level.
This event is also significantly supported by the Bureau for External Cultural Relations (North American and Oceanian Affairs Sector), Ministry of Culture of China.
