As this year marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from Britain to China, China Cultural Centre (Sydney) and Network of International Culturalink Entities will join forces to present a specially commissioned event titled “Hong Kong Movie Week”. A series of award-winning Hong Kong Films representing Hong Kong cinema during the post-war decades will be on screen, together with an insightful lecture to be delivered by an established senior Movie Critic Mr. Ho See Wing (Sampson) from Hong Kong that seeks to provide greater understanding into the world of films from a professional perspective.
About the movie:
From the aging rises the New. In The Spooky Bunch, Cantonese opera, the traditional art form that had fallen out of vogue in the 1970s and 1980s, provides an evocative dramatic context for the youthful New Wave. Director Ann Hui, in only her second film, puts an exclamation mark on the movement that effectively revolutionized Hong Kong cinema. A Cantonese opera troupe is invited to perform on an outlying island, where tradition interacts with modernity in ways quite different from those in the city. Art meets reality and the surreal when the bunch is drawn into a spooky imbroglio that dates back generations.
