Landscape and Mindscape — Online Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Culture, Lifestyle and Arts

Foreword

This Exhibition takes inspiration from “Meng Liang Lu” by Wu Zimu in the Southern Song Dynasty: “Smelling incense, making tea, hanging pictures and arranging flowers: these four trivial matters are assigned to my servants so that I will have more time to do more important things.” Since ancient times, the Chinese literati have devoted themselves to appreciating mountains and rivers. They advocated the philosophical idea of “harmony between man and nature” and practiced their ideas about art and life through daily artistic experiences such as appreciating paintings, tasting tea, playing the guqin, smelling incense and arranging flowers.

Under the wave of globalization, contemporary Chinese artists still advocate a way of life in which man and nature live in harmony, and they have inherited and developed an excellent traditional Chinese culture. Based on tradition and their perception of art, they incorporate art into daily life and adopt multiple artistic methods including ink painting, sketching, digital technology and porcelain to depict the subtle changes of the four seasons, and express their devotion to the mountains and rivers. Many wonderful works have been created in this way.

In cooperation with Network International Culturalink Entities(NICE), China Cultural Centre in Sydney is launching Landscape and Mindscape—Online Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Culture, Lifestyle and Arts. This Exhibition showcases 32 dramatic landscape works by 10 Chinese artists including Liu Zhibai, Dai Shunzhi, Zhao Jinhe and Zeng Jianyong, introduces the exquisite Longquan celadon porcelain vases, teaware and incense utensils, together with the melodious Chinese folk music, creating a new visual and auditory experience for the Australian audience. Let’s explore this exhibition online, learn about how the artist sees the world, and experience the “Art of Life” in modern China.
