Challenging the mainstream status of traditional Chinese painting began in the early 20th century. Most of the new Chinese painters who came back home from abroad in the 1930s introduced Western paintings and Western scientific realistic modeling methods into China to develop Chinese fine art. At that time, those who respectively supported tradition, reform and modernity were three mainstays of modern Chinese painting, which determined the direction for the evolution of Chinese painting in the 20th century.
一、 疑古：改良与革命（1900-1949）
传统中国画的主流地位受到挑战是从20世纪初开始的。30年代留学归来的中国新派画家，大多以引进西画、采用西洋科学写实造型方法为发展中国美术的基本思路。此时，现代中国画“传统派”、“改良派”和“现代派”三足鼎立，为 20 世纪中国画的演进预设出了基本方向。
