After 1949, the traditional style was considered unsuitable for expressing the characteristics of the new era, so Chinese painters had to go through a drastic reform. To undergo this transformation, first of all, Chinese painting should reflect the real life. Changing the content was key to transforming Chinese painting and also the major difference between the new Chinese painting and the old one. At that time, the Chinese painting creation system, which was founded by Xu Beihong at the beginning of the 20th century to centre on sketches and paintings from life, has been practiced more widely than ever before.
二、变古：改造国画与国画家（1950-1979）
1949 年之后，传统笔墨被认为不适合表现新的时代特征。中国画家处于不得不大幅自我改造的境况中。改造中国画被认为首先要使中国画与现实生活发生关系，创作内容的转变是改造的关键，也是新国画区别旧国画的主要标志。徐悲鸿在20世纪初创立的，以素描写生为主的中国画创作体系此时得到了空前广泛的实践。
